“I am building because I want to leave a home for my daughter. I want to have a place I can call home.”
Shakita Woodbury is an Account Specialist at Terminix and a single mother to her three-year-old daughter, Grace. Grace loves to play outside, especially on the swings at the playground. Together, the mother-daughter-duo loves to do each others makeup and cook with each other.
Currently, Shakita and Grace’s living situation has been very difficult. The two have been living with Grace’s father and Shakita tells us “It has its ups and downs. I am appreciative he is giving me a place to live.” However, the neighbors in the area smoke all day and night, so Shakita can never let her daughter go out and play. After learning that her family was accepted into the Habitat program, Shakita says “I was excited and overjoyed and just gave God the praise. I’m breaking a generational curse.”
“I enjoy working towards something and helping others do the same,” Shakita says. She is excited to begin her sweat equity hours and wants to learn how to paint and lay mulch. In her new forever home, she is excited to be able to watch Grace run around in the yard. She says she expects her life to be “brighter and positive” after moving in.
For anyone interested in applying to the Habitat Homeownership Program, Shakita offers this advice: “Stay positive and before you apply make sure you have no debt or collections.” For more information on how to apply, please visit our Apply Page on our website.
“My house will be everything I’ve dreamed of.”
