“My house will be a stepping stone to life’s adventures.”

Breanna McLeod is a Registered Medical Assistant for Neuspine Institute and has worked there for over eight years. She is a single mother to five-year-old Karter who she considers to be “very inquisitive and intelligent”. He absolutely adores Spider-Man, especially Miles Morales from Into the Spiderverse. In school, Karter enjoys finding the letters to his name, drawing, and finding creative ways to make letters. He enjoys spending time with family, especially his cousins and sisters. At nighttime, he has developed a habit of going out to find his grandma and great-grandma within the stars. How cute! As for Breanna, in her free time she enjoys making candles, making others smile, and spending time with her son. She was born and raised in Tarpon Springs and is excited to own her own home nearby her hometown.

The McLeod family’s journey toward homeownership was not without it’s challenges. In October of 2020, Breanna’s mother sadly passed away. This really affected her, as she was hoping that her mom could have been a part of her journey with Habitat. She currently lives in an unsafe duplex that features a roof that is caving in and the inability to make any home improvements. “It’s a struggle coming home everyday to a place you can’t truly call your own.”

Staff from Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas & West Pasco were the ones who introduced the idea of becoming a homeowner to Breanna. When she got the news that she was accepted into the program, should could not have been more thankful. She says “The feeling was unreal. I didn’t know what to say or do but call my sister-in-law and fill her in on the beautiful news.”

Breanna and Karter are beyond ready to have a place that they can call their forever home. However, they know that it doesn’t come without putting in a lot of hard work and having responsibilities. They are prepared and excited to finally begin this new stage in their life. “The thought of being a homeowner excites me in many ways, such as being able to create family memories and traditions. Adios to going out looking for family activities and hello to staying home and making fun adventures in the comforts of our very own house.”

“I’m super excited to decorate and build our home with the intentions of permanency and love,” Breanna says. Many of the furniture items that go into the Habitat homes come from our ReStores. Habitat ReStores are nonprofit retail centers where new and gently used donated building materials and home furnishings are sold at discounted prices. If you are interested in shopping, volunteering, or donating to our ReStores, you can check out our ReStore Page on our website for more information.

“My son deserves a solid foundation and I dream to have our future planted in a place in which we can truly call our own.”
