“I am building because we want to feel safe.”
Jose Mateo has been working for 17 years in maintenance at Freedom Square. He has been married to his wife, Milagros, for 26 years, and together they have a 22- year- old son. They moved to Florida 21 years ago, previously living in Ohio. They sought comfort and safety for themselves and found solace in Habitat for Humanity.
Jose and his wife resided in a mobile home. Throughout hurricane season, they would face multiple evacuations, with fear of what they would face when they returned home. The home already required many repairs, and the damage would be exacerbated by the storms. “We are an elderly couple and want safety and security” explains Jose. The lack of stability pushed them to seek comfort and safety, which they found through the Habitat program.
When accepted into Habitat for Humanity, Jose and his wife felt that a better quality of life was more obtainable, and looked forward to having a new home for themselves. Jose and his wife are excited to be a part of this program, looking forward to enjoying their home, rather than stressing about what future damage might occur. Jose encourages others to join the Habitat mission as well. “It can be a rewarding experience” he explains.
