“Habitat for Humanity is a feeling of home.”

Single mom of two and dog mom of two, Alisha Davis, is on her journey towards homeownership with Habitat for Humanity. Alisha is a nationally certified medical assistant with MyCare Medical and has worked there for four years. In 2014 she graduated from ATA Career Education with my associates in Medical Assisting. Since then, she attended PHSC for her associates in human and social services where she just recently graduated last year. In fall of 2020, she began working towards her bachelor’s degree in Social work at Saint Leo University. In the future, Alisha says “I would like to work with domestic violence victims.” She has two daughters, Haylee (age 10) and Isabella (age 7), who love going to school to see their friends and were previously involved in dance and gymnastics. Haylee’s interests include reading, arts and crafts, experiments, and YouTube. Isabella’s enjoys fashion, make-up, Barbie’s, and baby dolls.

For the past six years, she has been living in a home that is infested with ants, has plumbing issues, and lacks the necessary space for her family. Her current neighborhood is not safe and has experienced a house burning down next door, squatters living nearby, and a drive-by shooting happening right in front of her home. Before moving here, she was homeless. Receiving the news that her family was accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program was just the glimmer of hope that she needed. She tells us, “When I found out I was accepted into the Habitat program I was very excited. All I could think about is this is the part of a new beginning that is very much needed for myself and children.”

Alisha is looking forward to her new life in her Habitat forever home. “I am looking forward to having a bedroom with a closet and working air conditioning.” She is excited to give her children a home where they feel safe and can grow up in.

Building a home for a family like the Davis’ would not be possible without volunteers in our community who dedicate their time helping with painting, landscaping, or other construction duties. Alisha says that volunteering is a way to change someone’s life while also learning valuable skills you can use in your own life. “Home is where my kids and I can enjoy life.”

The Davis Family home was dedicated on April 29th, 2022.
