Terrina Allen is a Certified Medical Professional at Professional Healthcare and is on her journey towards homeownership with her 19-year-old son, Amondrai. Amondrai’s interests include makes and models of cars, playing video games that requires logic and reasoning skills, listening to music, and becoming a future law enforcement officer. Terrina is a dedicated single mother who does her best to keep a roof over their head, clothes on their back and food on their table. Soon enough, the family of two will have a forever home that will provide safety and stability and create generational wealth for years to come.

The Allen Family’s current living situation has caused many stressful challenges for Terrina and Amondrai. “Our last year was tough because of the challenges we faced within the home. We were dealing with plumbing, floods, and burst pipes that caused a lot of mold and mildew that triggered my son’s asthma,” Terrina explains. On top of the many maintenance issues, their rent also continued to increase which made it very difficult to afford.

“Homeownership is very important to me to have something to call my own. I will be the second person within the family to own a home and truly understand the process of homeownership which means a lot given my background. I was not taught about savings, homeownership, or reliability from my family. I am determined to defy the odds because I know what it’s like to sleep in a shelter and have to guard your child and belongings. This experience has taught me to never give up and to keep my eyes on the prize and create a foundation for me and my son.”

During her time in the Habitat program thus far, Terrina says that she is more knowledgeable and frugal when it comes to homeownership. “The lessons I have learned throughout the program will be taught to my son and anyone else I can share this information with.” In her new home, she is excited to get the opportunity to decorate. Many Habitat homeowners in our program choose to decorate their home with furniture purchased from the Habitat ReStores; nonprofit retail centers where new and gently used building materials and home furnishings are sold at discounted prices.
