“My home will be my forever home that I am able to build a life for me and my daughter.”
Monica Allen is a Reconsideration Analyst for Anthem Insurance Company and has been working there for 13 years. She is a single mother to her 15-year-old daughter, Tahnya. Tahnya is an athlete and loves to dance, cheer, play flag football, and do gymnastics. Her mother is very involved in all of her activities and loves to attend ever game and competition that she is in. Both Tahnya and her mother are outgoing and social butterflies. In her free time, Monica likes to line dance, hang out with her friends, and travel.
In the past 11 years, Monica has moved several times as she has been trying to give her daughter a safe and clean place to stay. She tells us “I have been evicted twice but one of my evictions were overturned because the landlord knew I was really trying. I was over draft on my checking account more times than I can count. My car was repossessed. I moved in with my best friend thinking I could save move. I was wrong and I dug myself in a deeper hole. I felt defeated. I called out to God for help because I did not know what else to do. Slowly but surely my life is turning around.”
Receiving the news that she and her daughter were accepted into the Habitat program was a blessing for Monica. “I was overjoyed and thanked God for this amazing opportunity he has blessed me with.” She is very excited about having her own home where she does not need to move around because of rent prices. “I am eager to plant roots, make memories, and have family gatherings at my home.” Having her own home will be the fresh new beginning that Monica and Tahnya have been waiting for.
For anyone who is considering applying for the Habitat program, Monica offers this advice: “Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful program that teaches you about budgeting and maintaining your finances without over spending. Also, there are people there to help you and guide you along your journey. I encourage you to go for it – it’s an amazing opportunity.” For more information on how to apply or refer someone to the Habitat program, please visit our Apply Page on our website.
“I am building because it will teach me discipline and hard work does pay off in the long run.”
