“Habitat for Humanity is changing lives for the better, one home at a time.”

Jasmine Middleton and her nine-year-old daughter, Chance, are building their Habitat house in a place that is already close to home: Pinellas County, where Jasmine was born and raised. She is currently employed at the Pinellas Country School Board as a secretary and bookkeeper. Her daughter is often described as an “outgoing girly-girl”. She is very into princesses and wears her many princess dresses at every chance she gets – even to bed! She loves taking care of her baby dolls and being a “pretend mommy”. Chance also loves shopping at her favorite store: Target! Jasmine says that her family is small, but mighty.

“My daughter Chance is the true example of girl power. She was born with a heart defect that required her to have a heart transplant at just four months old. Since then, she has overcome many obstacles, and undergone dozens of surgeries. From being told she may never walk or talk, to watching her dance ballet, and enjoy bouncing a ball. In fact, she has taught me how to be a fighter as well. I love being her mom, and look forward to the opportunity to offer her the stability and comfort that owning a home brings.” Chance was also diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy,

The apartment that the mother-daughter-duo currently lives in is not the best for a child with special needs. “We live on a busy street and close to a hospital, and Chance doesn’t do well with loud noises. Because of complaints from my downstairs neighbor, my daughter has to use a low profile bed, that, because of her cerebral palsy, is harder for her to get in and out of. We also experience water leaks that cause the carpet to mildew.”

Getting accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program was life changing for Jasmine and Chance. “I know my life will change for the better when I become a homeowner. Owning a home not only provides my family with stability, but creates generational wealth.” She is excited about celebrating holidays in their new home and inviting friends and family over to visit.

Habitat’s mission could not be possible without volunteers from our community. Jasmine says “Being a Habitat volunteer is one of the most rewarding experiences. Not only are you providing a valuable service to the community, but also making a huge impact for a future homeowner and their family”. If you are interested in volunteering on a build site, in our ReStore, or at one of our events, please check out our Volunteer Page for more information.

“My house will be my place of peace and refuge.”
