“My house will be our serenity and stabilization.”
Norma Myers is a Certified Pawnbroker for Ezcorp and a single mother to five growing teenagers. Her oldest son, DaiQuan, is 22-years-old and enjoys playing football and basketball. He even likes getting out on the neighborhood court sometimes to play basketball with his community. Winston, Norma’s second oldest son, is 20-years-old and enjoys playing football for his college team and watching sports on TV. Kamarean is the middle child of the family. At 18-years-old, he also enjoys football and basketball, but also dabbles in a bit of little league. Harrell is the youngest boy of the family at 13-years-old and he loves to play flag football and run track. Naomi is Norma’s only daughter and she is the youngest in the family. She is 10-years-old and loves to run track, swim, create art, and make videos! The family has many differing opinions, but continues to remain close with one another while respecting and supporting everyone’s choices.
Despite all of her hard work and the effort she puts into raising her five children, Norma still felt like she was failing her children because of the harsh living conditions they were forced to endure. The Myers Family has experienced everything from sewer and plumbing problems, to electrical issues and no AC, and even black mold in their home. She could not afford to change living locations, so she decided to take the first step towards a better home and life for her family and apply for Habitat for Humanity.
Earlier this year, Norma was accepted into the Habitat program. Her first thoughts were “Thank you, God. You have never let me down. I am so thankful.” Before she knows it, Norma will have a home to call her own that will be safe, affordable, and will offer enough space for each of her children to grow and thrive. In her new forever home, Norma is most looking forward to “Being able to display ourselves through color, pictures, and design with the warmth and care we put in taking care of and making memories in our new home”. The family knows first hand the curveballs and twists that life can throw at you, but with their new Habitat home, they will not have to worry any longer about lack of stability or security.
Volunteers are very important to the Habitat mission. For those who are considering volunteering for the organization, Norma says “Just take a second to think about where you are in life or may want to be. Now, think of how fast you would be able to get there if someone who could and was able came and helped you along the way. “People, or even you, may tell yourself what you can’t and won’t be able to do because you didn’t go the same road as some. Or maybe you have started the process later in life because you had other responsibilities you had to take care of first. But it doesn’t matter when you begin, just keep going until you finish.”
