Habitat Pinellas and West Pasco is excited to join the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) in celebrating Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 1st – 7th, 2020. The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry. WIC Week raises awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and emphasizes the growing role of women in the industry.
Candace, a Site Supervisor Apprentice II, believes building homes was her “God given purpose”. She previously worked 18 years for a technology company, holding multiple support positions. “Although these positions were rewarding, I always felt like something was missing. I was not fulfilling my God given purpose, which was building homes.”
Candace graduated from Everglades University with a BS in Construction Management, followed by a six-week construction program where she received her NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) and her OSHA 10. She now has been with Habitat for 1 & 1/2 years, supervising the volunteer tasks while completing the construction build from start to finish, building to code, calling in inspections and keeping the volunteers safe.
Although it is not as common for women to work in the industry, Candace tells any woman to not get discouraged.
“Follow your heart, and know that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”
“My proudest moment was being assigned to my own house and being responsible for the tasks from start to finish. Another proud moment was leading the charge on my first Women’s Build.”
Thank you, Candace, for being an exceptional Site Supervisor!
