Habitat Pinellas and West Pasco is excited to join the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) in celebrating Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 1st – 7th, 2020. The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry. WIC Week raises awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and emphasizes the growing role of women in the industry.
Amy, the Compliance Officer for Habitat, has worked with us for 14 years. “In the beginning when the affiliate was smaller I wore many hats which helped me learn many different aspects of Habitat over the years.”
She now handles all the federal grants and paperwork. “There are a lot of details that need to be tracked on a daily basis to stay compliant with all the various grants. All of the federal grants are tied to the purchase and/or construction of homes and have a wide range of requirements. From the purchase of lots to the tracking of invoices on houses, verifying the Energy Star certification to the completion and sale of the project. There is a lot of work to be done to get families into their homes.”
Amy’s biggest accomplishment in the industry has been being asked to present at Habitat International’s National Conference on SHOP/HUD funding, and accepting the Energy Star Affordable Housing Award on behalf of the affiliate. “I am also proud every time one of our families moves into their home that I helped fund through grants.”
“I would whole heartily encourage any woman to go into construction. It is not just a man’s occupation. There is a wide multitude of different occupations within the construction field that everyone should be able to find their niche. Also, going into affordable housing construction adds another layer where the harder you work, the more good you are doing for families in need. It is a great feeling at the end of the day knowing you helped others.”
Thank you, Amy, for all you do for the Habitat program!
