Courtney Burns is an Administrative Assistance for Pasco County Utilities and is a single mother to four amazing children. She is currently on her journey towards homeownership with Habitat so that she can provide a safe, stable, and affordable home for herself and her kids. The oldest child in the family is Cheyenne, who is 15 years old. She loves to paint abstract art, play board games, and read. She also loves Harry Potter and holding her new baby sister. The second oldest is Landon, a 13-year-old boy who enjoys playing video games, playing with Legos, Jurassic Park, and creating games by coding on the computer. Blake is the second youngest and is five years old. He loves playing outside, playing in the pool, and building things. He also loves big trucks and Iron Man. The baby of the family is newborn Alexis. She is only one month old, but really enjoys sleeping and eating!
“Our current living situation is a 790 square foot double wide mobile home,” Courtney explains to us. “The main issue is space. There is no where to put anything and the home feels so cluttered and confined, it tends to get overwhelming for everyone at times. There is no room for a kitchen table, so we just eat anywhere there is a spot. Not being able to eat dinner with the kids has been a challenge. Being able to eat dinner around a table with your children is very important, as I feel it is one of the biggest ways to communicate and have conversations with your kids.” Courtney’s best friend, who is also a Habitat homeowner, is the one who pushed her to apply for the program. “If it wasn’t for her consistently talking to me about Habitat I would have never applied. Sometimes we need that extra push….or pushes.” After being accepted into the Habitat program, Courtney’s first thought was
that she was finally going to have a space for a kitchen table!
Courtney imagines her life to be different in many ways after moving into her Habitat home. First and foremost, she will actually be a homeowner! “My children have never lived in an actual house, we have lived in mobile homes or apartments. So to even be able to live in a home is life changing.”
